The process of making these things involves the constant assembly and disassembly of the parts as the work develops. After what I thought was the final assembly I realised that the part featured in “another piece of the jigsaw puzzle”was not quite right so it had to be taken off and altered, This is what it looks like now, with the cut off bit underneath. One of the joys of working like this is that everything is fluid, nothing set in concrete until until it’s finished or abandoned.
Apropos of nothing, the other day my old chum John McGlade introduced me to an interesting word – prolepsis : a fundamental concept arising spontaneously in the mind without conscious reflection. A thought provoked by sense perception. This seems to go a long way towards explaining, or at least describing the creative process. A bit like the idea of thinking with your hands, which is how I tend to operate.
